Why it brings the sound together

Tube compression based on the Vari-Mu principle, as used in classics like the Fairchild 670, has a unique and unmistakable sound. It's very musical and has added that final touch to countless mixes.

The VTC embodies countless hours of listening tests and refinement. It starts compressing very gently and only becomes more noticeable at higher gain reduction levels. A high-pass filter in the detection path reduces the influence of low frequencies on compression. Combined with suitable attack and release settings, these features allow the VTC to compress up to 6 dB on the mix bus without audible pumping.

Golden Tone

The VTC signal passes through a total of 3 transformers and 2 tube stages per channel.

Why does that matter? Tubes (especially triodes) introduce harmonics that the human ear perceives as pleasing and which improve the clarity of individual sources. Tubes add presence to instruments. Transformers contribute to smooth saturation through their current → magnetic field → current conversion and inherent nonlinearities — even before any compression is applied. Bass becomes tighter and more defined. Highs are pleasantly rounded.

The VTC can be the difference between “pretty well mixed” and “sounds perfect.”

Sidechain High-Pass Filter

When activated, the filter makes the compressor less sensitive to low frequencies. This prevents the VTC from pumping when a strong bass hits.

Color/Comp Switch (New)

Compression can be deactivated, allowing the VTC to be used purely for coloration via its transformers and tubes. Use the input knob to control how hard the tubes are driven.

The bypass switch, on the other hand, removes the unit entirely from the signal path.
